Having a neighbourhood bakery is an utter delight – but a dangerous one! Almost as fun as a traditional old sweet shoppe, De Sucre is a delightful little bakery near the end of Caine Road that specialises in beautiful sweet treats and custom cakes with ornate decoration. Enter into the little wonderland and you’ll see all kinds of biscuit pops on sticks, brownies, cupcakes and other tasty treats laying around.
Having met the owner Kate in the store shortly after it opened, I decided I simply must review something chocolatey from there and asked for her recommendation. With a smile she took me to the chocolate brownies and pointed out the different dark chocolate and milk chocolate brownie options.
They were both incredibly light and each had a fluffiness that was without denseness. At first taste I was very intrigued because the airiness was slightly crumbly without being dry. It was almost as if the brownie was melt-in-your mouth, but in a finely baked way that didn’t easily fall apart. My brain still doesn’t quite understand the miracles of bakery but that didn’t dissuade it from guzzling both brownies in luxurious succession.
The dark chocolate brownie had a solid deep taste with one strong smooth layer of flavour that held its refined taste cleanly, while the milk chocolate brownie had more complexity to it with the chocolate richness unfolding over the taste buds into a sweet crescent of bright fluffy milk chocolate.
While not gluten free, I look forward to trying other chocolate delights from De Sucre and buying more yummy evening cupcakes for my Dearest Beloved over the months ahead.
