Hard to define but absolutely covetable. What is it about elegance that is so captivating?
From Audrey Hepburn to Grace Kelly, the echoes of elegance live on for decades, and bring to mind images of royalty and refinement that too often seems out of our reach in this modern day and age.
But not so, I say, for it being a lady is an art, and elegance ties strongly in to that.
I’ve noted two attributes of elegance which are easily replicable by anyone who desires to recreate themselves in an image of elegance.
The first is calmness of demeanor – an easy, measured manner that evokes images of stillness – of a reclining tiger sitting in the sun-dappled palace of a raja.
The second is purposeful motion. Smooth, controlled motions that serve a purpose. Elegance does not fidget, or compulsively text, or chew gum or twirl hair around fingers. Elegance sits in each moment and basks in it as if she is queen of it, and has no need to do anything other than the next immediately required thing.
I’ve observed many other areas, some more obvious than others, including dining and dressing, conversation and business, wearing hats and gloves and always looking for something to smile about in any situation, and other nibbles.
There are no defined rules of elegance, but hopefully you’ll find some tips and tricks here that will help you along your way.
Fabulously eccentric TV host, curvaceous model and founder of Hong Kong ’s first luxury corset brand, Pearls & Arsenic. I love sharing my passion for all things elegant and live with my Dearest Beloved and a fluffy Angora rabbit named Lord Pemberly III, who is a ridiculous snob.
